Mosaic Table by Jenny Klatt, 2001
Klatt was only 17 when she made this mosaic table. “I rolled out all the clay, cut the pieces and painted them myself,” she says. “I’d always gravitated toward art projects, but this was the first time where I was creating art in a more purposeful way.”
Necklace by Stephanie Wynne Lalin, 2001
Lalin designed this necklace, one of the first pieces of jewelry she ever made, when she was 18. She had come across a bead store and started teaching herself to make jewelry. For this particularly intricate piece, Lalin used all semi-precious stones and hand-weaved them together. It was while making this necklace that Lalin realized she had a talent for designing jewelry.
Klatt and Lalin in their studio, 2013
This picture of the design duo in their studio was taken on the day in January that they learned they were finalists for Fashion Group International's Rising Star Award. Their celebrated collections represent a synthesis of their two personal styles, Klatt says: "Stephanie's style is definitely the more polished, while mine is more relaxed."
Jemma Wynne collaboration with Gemfields, 2013
Jemma Wynne completed its first-ever collaboration this year, with Gemfields, the world's leading producer of ethically-sourced gemstones. These bangles feature stunning, one-of-a-kind emeralds from Zambia and an open design that sits close on the wrist. "Though this bracelet is one of our signature designs, working with emeralds was different and out of the box for us," Klatt says. "They did very well."
Alexander Kori Girard's "Systems of Space" series, 2013
The artist Alexander Kori Girard's "Systems of Space" series, created in 2010, is currently serving as Klatt's and Lalin's inspiration as they design their 2014 collections. "Our work is very geometric and colorful," Klatt says, "and the way he uses different shapes and color pairings is very interesting."
